For photovoltaic connectors, 1996 and 2002 were two very important years. Before 1996, there were no special photovoltaic connectors, and photovoltaic cables were connected by universal screw terminals or splice connections, with insulation tape on the outside. This method was time-consuming, laborious, and unreliable. With the increase in photovoltaic system installation, people hoped to have a fast, safe, and easy-to-operate connection scheme.

 

In 1996, based on this application environment and market demand, a new type of plug-in connector came into being, which is the real photovoltaic connector - MC3. Invented by Swiss company Multi-Contact(merged into the Staubli Group in 2002), MC stands for the brand name, and 3 is the diameter of the metal core. The MC3 body is made of TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) and is physically connected by friction fit. More importantly, the connection system of MC3 adopts MULTILAM technology to ensure the lasting stability of the connection.

 

In 2002, the MC4 redefined the PV connector once again with its true "Plug and play" approach. The insulation is made of rigid plastics (PC/PA) and is designed to be easy to assemble and install in the field. MC4 quickly gained market recognition and gradually became the standard for photovoltaic connectors.

 

MC4 connector is divided into wire end and board end, generally speaking, we refer to the MC4 wire end. MC4 is composed of metal parts and insulating parts. MC stands for multi-contact, and 4 is the diameter of the metal core.

 

Connectors from different manufacturers do not have the same specifications, dimensions, and tolerances, so there is no 100% match. If forced interplugging, it will lead to temperature rise, contact resistance change, and IP level can not be guaranteed, and then seriously affect the power generation efficiency and safety of resistors.

 

As multi-Contact is the first professional PV connector in the world, it sets many standards and has a huge influence. Many people mistakenly think that the foreign name of the PV connector is MC4, but it is not. Another PV connector, Amphenol has similar shipments and its model is HeliosH4.
